Deep Thoughts

At Gino’s, our passion for deep dish is as wide as Lake Michigan is deep (922 feet to be exact)! And, we know that our passion can only be sustained by a healthy planet.

We’re doing our part to be more environmentally sustainable by partnering with Alliance For The Great Lakes, a non-profit organization whose mission is to protect the largest freshwater resource in the world.

Our pizza might make your mouth water, but these stats will make your jaw drop:

Get this: According to the EPA’s blog at, “Much of the plastic ever made still exists. Worldwide, as many as one trillion plastic bags are used each year and less than 5 percent of plastic is recycled.” And, as if that weren’t enough, “In the United States, [...] we use over 380 billion plastic bags and wraps yearly, requiring 12 million barrels of oil to create.”

And, have you thought about plastic straws? Straws may not seem like such a big deal, but check out this number: According to TheLastPlasticStraw.Org, our consumption of straws in the U.S. is “enough straws to wrap around the Earth’s circumference 2.5 times a day!” At Gino’s, we are also lessening our footprint by holding back on plastic straws. From now on, plastic straws will only be available by request. In the meantime, we are also looking into compostable straws as an option for our guests.

Following our new #DeepAF ad campaign, we want everyone to know that we also #DigDeep and we’re putting our money where our mouth is. We have committed to donating $25,000 to Alliance For The Great Lakes this year and plan to raise these funds primarily through reusable bag sales in our restaurants and fundraiser events. We’re also on our way to calling it quits on plastic bags at our stores altogether. Additionally, we have added to our pledge by switching many of our disposable containers to recycled products.

Alliance for the Great Lakes works to protect the Great Lakes for today and tomorrow. They involve tens of thousands of people each year in advocacy, volunteering, education, and research to ensure the lakes are healthy and safe for all. Their staff is headquartered in Chicago, with field offices in Buffalo, Cleveland, Detroit, and Milwaukee. Their Board of Directors represent a wide range of interests and expertise from around the Great Lakes region. Their organization’s mission is “to protect and restore the Great Lakes for people and wildlife, forever,” and we couldn’t be more excited to have a hand in their mission!
